Agronomist position at local seed dealer
I am currently a senior in Agronomy at K-State and will be graduating in december. I have been looking for a part-time or contract postion for a while now to supplement my farm income. I have gained interest from a local seed dealer that currently has such a position. The problem is trying to decide how to structure the agreement, especially pay. How should i negotiate this. Im not really sure what would be fair. Also any idea what the pay is for individual agronomist to scout fields say once a week during the growing season. We really don't have many in the area that are doing consulting on an individual basis. I need to be in the 12 to 15,000 a year range for it to really be worth my time, otherwise i could make a few thousand by trying to increase custom work.
Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Re: Agronomist position at local seed dealer
Independent scouting in this area pays so much an acre for the entire growing season. Believe it is around $5.00. Probably unable to get them to fork over this much, but I would ask them how many acres you will be inspecting and distance/range (miles). covered. Also if you would be considered a contractor rather than an employee. If a contractor thus no benefits and therefore paying the 15% SS self employment tax, I would want most of that $5.00 regards of the range covered/miles traveled. Expectations should be proportionally less if a mileage allowance is given or transportation provided.
