Another Letter to the Editor in the main Iowa newspaper. This Crop Insurance Subsidy has really kicked-off with many non-farmer, Big City people calling for an end to Subsidized Crop Insurance or letters like this one supporting the current Crop Insurance Program of where the taxpayer pays for 68% of our insurance. Anyway, all the local Iowa papers are picking up on this debate between mostly the non-farmer, Big City People and the more farmer, rural country people. Letter to the editor: Don't rely on other nations for food and fuel

The Register’s March 18 editorial, “Farmers Need to Justify Fat Insurance Subsidy,” is alarmingly off-target. It is in our best interest to ensure American farmers stay in business because our agricultural backbone is one of the primary reasons for our nation’s strength. Being self-sufficient with the most sophisticated agricultural system in the world is not something we should take for granted.
We’ve seen the consequences of depending on other countries for another important resource, energy. Do we want to chance becoming a net importer of food as we are with oil?
By taking away programs that minimize a farmer’s vulnerability to weather and market forces, we lose farms. Once a farm is gone, we don’t get it back.
Let’s give American agriculture the recognition it deserves as our nation’s most bountiful resource for food, fuel and fiber. And yes, this resource is worth fostering and protecting. Instead of asking farmers to defend themselves for trying to eke out a living, we should ask ourselves what it would be like to depend on other countries not only for our fuel, but for our food. I would rather not find out.
