Arrived AZ

Jump to solution

Hit Apache Junction Thurs nite. Made it through KS OK TX and NW NM right ahead of some snow on Thurs. Sure was cold. Cold here also. Not like SW IA or the rest of the places you all are at. When we went through KS at around mid teens couldn't help but think of Shaggy. I think we were a little east of him ( Concordia, Great Bend, Dodge City, Liberal) . Holy Buckets there are eagle killers on that route but didn't see any on the ground or in the air.

It was nice to rise to bright sunny skys and temps around 60 by mid afternoon. One quick question for everyone. How deep do you expect frost to reach on this cold spell and do you think that helps farming for the next year or not?

Gee Wizz  Weedman - There's nothing to dry farming in SW Kansas !!!!! I'm just say'n' - all they do is plant it - then turn on the water - then shell off 270 bpa corn in the fall and  they make Millions - and just work like 2 weeks in the spring and 2 weeks in the fall -- Smiley WinkSmiley Very Happy

Know if you want to see hard time farming - then you need to come on over East to IN - you will leave just shaken your head - like why to they even try and farm here -- oh - I better put in a LOL

Don't forget the sunscreens - lol

BTW  -- 74 here this morning - but outside its 26 with freezing drizzle - on top of the 6 inches of snow from the other day - with another 2 inches coming tonight - oh and lets not forget the wind at 15 - gusting to 28 this morning --

You know -- I take that back about the sunscreens - put on trophy oil - hope you look like a lobster ! Smiley Surprised

Have fun ---------- I guess -- lol

If you went thru the cities you posted, I assume you were traveling on Highway 56.  That being the case, you came within about 20 miles of me.  We are just NW of the Great Bend area.  Temps in the mid teens, hogwash.  We were below 0 this morning in a few areas, luckily with only light winds.  Safe travels to you on your return trip.

We were lucky ------ he nearly hit us both.  ------------You should have made the trip on monday and tuesday.

Weedman answer is ------------- TOOOOO THE BONE.

in the liberal area--- location not a mental condition, Jeff-------- it depends on whether we are wet or not.  Wet ground doesn't frost as deep as fast as dry ground.---- but a couple of feet would not suprise me by next week at this rate.  Will take a week or two of indian summer to get us back in the field.

Question here is did we winter kill the later planted wheat.  We ended up with less than 2 inches of snow for cover and it came after the cold instead of ahead of it.  Odd thing is we get more damage with dry ground----- I always thought that was backwards.

Thanks Weedman, been wondering how you did.

Your coffee is getting a little frosty ------ I'll set it over by the fireplace.

The clerk at the motel in Liberal commented about the weather on Tues. Maybe around 70. When we pulled into Liberal Weds evening it was about 17 F and 12 F at 6 AM when we headed out. I think it was between Great Bend and Dodge City that we saw someone applying NH3.  Did you guys get snow from the system that we were trying to get ahead of or did it stay south?

A little over an inch here in Liberal.

At the farm 14 miles west about 2 inches.

I will make you a fresh cup on the way back if you have time.

It will be around the middle of March. You might be busy farming by then. But I would really enjoy it if my sweetie and I could stop by. We almost always follow the same path. Sometimes we do go up 83 through Garden City instead of 56. It would be fun to learn a little more about irrigated and dryland farming in  SW Kansas.

I've been to Arizona twice. It was the best I have ever felt. I could breath and my back, shoulders hips and knees didn't ach till noon every day. I hope to visit the desert more as I get older. BTW I thought Sedona was the most beautiful places I've seen.
Enjoy Weedman!

Holy Buckets! I didn't know what that box that says solution meant. I clicked it and now it appears I've credited ECIN's post as a solution to my original thread. Talk about giving credit where credit isn't due!  Smiley LOL

Many of you probably already know but AZ is a strange weather state. It is very possible to have the high and low temps for the day in the lower 48. And it is strange to be driving along and suddenly in the middle of desert a beautiful alfalfa field.

But it is only 32 F this morning , give me another cup of coffee. One more thing although it is too late today for you central time zone guys; check out Les Feldick Back to Bible on the ION network @ 7AM M-Thurs.. Most of you won't regret.

Wow, ECIN.  I didn't know it was that easy in SW KS.  Farmers I know that live there work harder than anyone else I know.  They may take a short vacation to the beaches two weeks in a year, but the rest of the time, it's nose to the grindstone, and they earn every cent they make.
