FWIW, winter wheat is starting to break dormancy and it doesn't seem to be the makings of a rose garden. We are going to need lots of help from Mother Nature real soon in this area.

Just a suggestion.
I have never understood the socialogy of a farming community, but I would look to your better relationships with larger farms in the area.
I am always amazed at how little farmers share information. Seems like the closer they live the less they want to share. But lets face it we each basically know the position of the other.
Find some one you respect and ask like you did here.
Most of the larger farms do testing on things they think might have some chance of being worth the investment. They have the acres to do it and can handle the risk. A smaller producer should be able to share in that research without trying to match the cost.
And the point I am trying to make ----------------- Get a report of that research first hand, and in private. The same experiment information, delivered second hand or third hand, will always carry an interpretation or promotional slant that is hard to see through.
And every salesman wants to tell every potential customer what the "big guy" is doing to make it work. Whether that is true or not.
Get that info from the unbiased source and it will save you some expense and guide you to the things most worth trying.
No sense in us all trying every new idea until it is a proven winner.
When we are as far apart as you and I, there are regional differences, but locally or at the research station at Hays results should be consistant and reliable.
