Re: Bird Flu Effecting Egg Prices and Availability
Around here there are small hobby flocks, we get brown eggs for I think $2/doz.
But this talk of eggs reminds me of the Napoleon Dynamite movie where he works in a chicken house and he gets eggs for lunch and they pay him in change. The one old guy, says "I found some Shoshone arrowheads over there"

Just seeing Valifornia is possibly fining farmers $1.5 million fir taking water " illegally". It is going to be interesting to see how anyone stays in agriculture in America in this century.

Re: Bird Flu Effecting Egg Prices and Availability
At $3.85 they will be around a while although the outside flocks of the Amish around our area weren't affected like the inside groups of several thousand - wonder why ?

Also, the Amish do not make their business known much...

The state health dept in Nebraska checked the Amish flock that was in the perimeter of mega break out - they still have their flock as we get some of their items at the local farmers market - just saying ?

Re: Bird Flu Effecting Egg Prices and Availability
Monday afternoon I drove by a couple turkey barns in our area where all the turkeys
had been euthanized and composted inside 3 months ago.
Both barns are full of turkeys again.
Any one else know how long barns have been empty in your area?
How much of a factor is the summer heat in allowing these barns to be operational again?

Re: Bird Flu Effecting Egg Prices and Availability
We had interior " whitewash" pass to complete, and a total depop ahead of that. This summer, it is PRRS 174. This is a real rough patch for us.
It boils down to getting facilities back into production as soon as possible. Nobody's earning anything, unless you do!

Re: Bird Flu Effecting Egg Prices and Availability
Working through the numbers and the "turn around" data, I have been impressed with the sheer size of the industry and its quick turn around time.
There is just a lot of protein choice and flexability in the food chain. I suspect some price rise in eggs and poultry meat will push enough usage into other meats or bean protien choices for a short time and we will move on.
The growers and producers will probably see the most economic pressure..
Repopulation will be fast enough to limit the effect on feed requirements.... IMO

Re: Bird Flu Effecting Egg Prices and Availability
My egg prices have remained the same. When my neighbor leaves home (hobby chicken farmer of about 100 birds) I sneak into the hen house and grab a pocket full. I'm not sure if it's bird flu or not but the neighbor is getting sick because she thinks her hens aren't producing. My prices have never increased and eggs are nearly always available.
