Cargill says lost $90 mln from China rejections of GMO U.S. corn CARG.UL SYNN.VX - RTRS

12-Sep-2014 13:37
CHICAGO, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Cargill Inc CARG.UL has suffered more than $90 million in damages from China's rejections of U.S. corn containing a genetically modified trait developed by Syngenta AG SYNN.VX, the grain trader said in a lawsuit on Friday.
The damages are a "direct and proximate result" of Syngenta's decision to sell its Agrisure Viptera corn, known as MIR 162, before China approved the variety for import, according to the lawsuit.
Cargill sued a unit of Syngenta, the world's largest crop chemicals company, in Louisiana state court for damages stemming from the rejections.

Re: Cargill lost 90 Mil from Rejections

You nailed Jim - heres a small clip from an article on starlink

Aventis submitted a new evaluation of the corn to EPA and requested a temporary approval for human consumption. The new information demonstrated the consumption of corn based foods that contain StarLink would expose consumers to Cry9C many times smaller than needed to cause sensitivity. Subsequently, Aventis voluntarily withdrew registration for StarLink corn. It will no longer be grown.

Now heres the kick in the pants !

As a result of this episode, the Aventis Company and others in the biotechnology industry will seek approvals for both human and animal consumption before marketing genetically enhanced seeds

What trait was in the corn that made them not move to approve?
