Re: Competition no more.......

Stopped in at John Deere the other day. They had a few leftover 2020 calendars at the parts counter. Guess what?  The feature every month is a 4020 tractor. Hmmm. Tractor Porn!!  I asked if Deere was gonna start making them again. Parts guy didn’t think so

Re: Competition no more.......

BA it is not a talent or a gift... it is an acquired skill.  I'll grant ya, harder for some than others but not unattainable.

Every guy who works on it long enough gets it..... not in a bolt of lightning or a beam from heaven or a package from amazon.  But in the smile on his dads face.  Because dad drives the second cultivator that works the passes between yours and patiently sees the progress.  He is the guy who sets the blades closer to the crop for you when you get good enough.  He is the guy that knows the look in your eye when you finish your first full week of cultivation every daylight hour without one damaged stalk of crop. ( I think I remember two of those)

We have got to try to create that for the young guys who replace us in the chemical, techincal, mapping,  auto steer world.  I failed at that.  And I find it hard to know where a young farmer finds fulfillment these days.  Maybe just in seeing their personal decisions through and learning to enjoy evaluation in a non failure sort of way.

Doesn't have to be dad.  Can be "Buckshot" down the road who just happens to stop by and comment on your work. (the straightest row driver known to Stevens County)  But us elders have a clear function for young farmers.  I think we get lost in the "New stuff" and special times these new guys live in, how hard we had it, and forget we need to cultivate that sense of self worth in them with a kind word or two.  And maybe avoid the opportunity to verbally note they drive a truck they can't afford.  Or find something that totally shocks them ,,,,, like "your doing a great job with the kids".

It is ok if that is the only lie of the day -- just smile and pat his back.  These days we need folks like that.  Who know what to say and when not to say it.

God knows the democrats need someone like that.  Smiley Happy

Re: Competition no more.......

2 things i have been teased about in the last few years, cultivating and walking beans.

We have a few spots where if the pre-emerge doesn't work right and

you can't spray at the right time the buttonweed and giant ragweed need to be killed with steel.

I enjoy walking beans - especially when my grandson goes along.

That boy is a rock pickin machine too!!
