Drought Disaster
In a drougt disaster, or a multi cause diaster
I stopped everything yesterday to take an
Overview...it was not good.,.wheat small, some
Of it, maybe a 70% stand...other is bigger but
Some turning blue, some brown, no nice
Bright green.
Pastures...horrible...little if any grass, I have 3 plus
Ponds that are bone dry. I drove to the deepest
Part of all of them which would be 8 to 12 feet.
All our hay is sold out. Fellows looking for
Something cheap
Area salebarn having sale, over 1000 cows, 800 piggy
Heifers, and 90 bulls
Another sale barn had similar but a bit smaller
Sale last week.
Guys don't know what to do, only money they
Made was with cattle last year....and now
They don't know if they can hold onto them
Folks things are bad
Oh... blizzard tonight just west of us
Lows in the upper teens for the next couple
Days, that will make livestock sick and not
Doing crops any favors
Ok has some bad fires in panhandle....local emergency Management has shut down all
Open flames in many county's, including BBQs
And fire pits.
7 day noaa precipitation models show up to
0.25 inch.....that will not dampen the grass

Re: Drought Disaster
In the last seven days sw ks has been in the 90's twice and the teens twice lots of nice wind some clouds and snow flakes. A sprinkle ......
It is April 13th and the crp crass and pastures are brown as if it was January.
Made 95 yestercay and tomorrow morning will be 23 degrees. 2011 was similar ----- but this time it is dryer.... last measureable genreal rain was August 2017. In 2011 we had heavy rain and snow between Christmas and new Years before it dried out and the heat moved in.
One more difference this time Cheapo....... It was all south of I-70 in 2011...... This time it is dry farther north and east .
Today the dairies in sw ks are bidding 80-90 $ per ton for green chop wheat. If they can find any...... my guess is there is irrigated wheat they will get bought.... since those 15 degree temps last week.

Re: Drought Disaster
Taken it on the chin and wallet for several years.
My sources tell me some down that way haven't
Had a good wheat crop going on 6 years, that
Would kill aph.
We're on our second year here, guess have a
Low tolerance for pain.
Don't know the tonnage of chopped wheat yeild
But that might not be bad.

Re: Drought Disaster
green chop is a good market for wheat........ but it is inconsistent and needs short delivery distances.
Some of the feedlots in the Gove County area have used triticale/wheat chop for years.
