Farm Land -- The Film

I got a e-mail the other day from my sister on this film - it's due out here ( Indiana May 1st )  It' about - I think 6 farmers - ranchers in there 20's , Telling there story on farming ,  I wtched the trailer forthe film and thought , dam  it was lke yesterday that I was in there shoes - young ! and the what IF's , the victories and the Losses , ( 83 , 88 ) The big questin sometimes ,, How the He11 am I going to make it , Someway I did , I guess , lol

I am glad that i have farmed when I have , I just think that as a young buck or philly today , that the future will have a lot more - you can't do this or that , OR maybe I should say rules , and then you have the people that DON'T have a clue putting in there 2 cents worth ,

I wish the best for the NEXT generation of us coming on . I guess that the film did make me feel alittle sad though , as I have way more harvest's behind me than ahead , Good luck !

Re: Farm Land -- The Film

Yep, it was quite a journey from pitching manure, silage, walking beans, scooping corn to air condition tractors and 24 row planters and 12 rw corn heads.

Yes it was quite a struggle to find a land owner that would rent land to you and a banker that would loan you the money to farm. perhaps we started out part time with that job in town and a family cosigner or the FHA.

It seemed tough then but must be almost impossible now. Some think the subsidized crop insurances helps the BTO but can you imagine a start up guy trying to financing an operation without a government crop insurance to give more security to a prospective lender. How many banks will loan crop expenses without crop insurance?

I wouldn't want to restart from the beginning but wouldn't mind a do over in part with a new strategy. When i was young and knew everything, I wasn't as successful as i was after i forgot some of that nonsense and focused on a real objective.

Kraft-t very well said as i can relate to it all being in my 50's. Did you get into the shocking of oats and hand picking of the ear corn? Well i missed that but growing up on the farm in the 60's we sure worked hard back then compared to today. The livestock guys still work pretty hard today.  Makes me wonder what another 20 years will bring !

Re: Farm Land -- The Film

I was around during the oat shocking but I was too little to do that. Dad bought a pull type combine in the late 40's and i was only about nine or ten. Hand corn picking was a little before my time as well though I can remember some of it being done.
