Farm gate prices
Saw story today from USDA that the index of prices received by American farmers for our products in April was down a bit versus March, but up a whole 7 percent from a year ago. That seems like a pretty big jump, doesn't it? Where's it coming from? -- Rob

Re: Farm gate prices
Do you have a link to the information? It would be interesting to see the breakdown of how the index is determined.
I accidentally hit the "kudos" button when I was looking for the reply button.

Re: Farm gate prices
I am just trying to figure out all the buttons! Makes sense 09 was down quite a bit from 08 and 10 seems to be a little higher. I don't really know what I am talking about just thought I would try to respond. JR

Re: Farm gate prices
I've not compared most commodities, however, wheat is not going up at the farmgate. The basis is actually widening to as much as 1.20 or more. Our elevator has stopped moving old crop wheat, thanks to sub- $4.00 prices. They think the carry will make good money after harvest, thanks to lower acres going into harvest..

Re: Farm gate prices
Its not corn, wheat, or beans.
How about hogs 4 may 09 to 3 may 10 up 44% (61/88 Weekly fututurs)
Cattle 19 Apr 09 to 20 Apr 10 up 15% (86/99 again weekly futures)
I know this isn't farmgate, but I didn't know a quick ref for that.
