Farmers, CDL and Medical Certificate

Unless your truck is exempted as a covered farm vehicle, by 30 Jan 2014 CDL holders must self-certify which category they drive in.  They are interstate or intrastate, exempt or non-exempt.  Those who have renewed or licensed recently have already made the election.  Those who will license or renew before 30 Jan will certify then.  Those of us who renew after 30 Jan 2014 must self-certify with our state DOT.

If we don't, our license will be reclassified as non-commercial.

Check your state DOT if this is all new to you.

In Iowa, you can self-certify online, at a drivers license station or by mail, fax or email.

Re: Farmers, CDL and Medical Certificate

you know why jim? we have to do that too (indiana and everybody else) cause it's some homeland security bullcrap and the federal govt.cannot by law ask you where you are/want to go. something to do with that pesky constitution and bill of rights so theytold the states to ask you if you are going to cross state lines. i personally don't see where it's any of their business.

Re: Farmers, CDL and Medical Certificate

It is a real mess for us folks living next to state lines.  In many cases the fed mandates conflict with state laws.  Especially for farmers.

Just more nanny federal government foolishness.

The states are blackmaled with federal funds to act as enforcement for mandates that are handed down and change on a regular basis.

Try delivering to a feedlot in Texas from a point in Ks.  Total 60 miles.  You better be meeting DOT regulations as an interstate carrier even though those three states you are in have reciprocating agreements to honor each others driving laws in regards to agriculture.----been that way for a while.

Now take your 1 ton pickup the same miles to get a sack of parts.------------ same rules,  better have your medical card and that DOT number on the door.

Job justifying foolishness at tis best.  Protecting us from our dangerous next door neighbors.

Re: Farmers, CDL and Medical Certificate

Here's the official excuse:

"Why was the Medical Examiner’s Certificate rule implemented?
This rulemaking action will help to prevent medically unqualified drivers from operating on the nation's highways by providing states’ licensing agencies a means of identifying interstate CDL holders who are unable to obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate and taking action to downgrade their CDLs accordingly.

The final rule will also serve as a deterrent to drivers submitting falsified Medical Examiner’s Certificates because the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and states’ enforcement personnel will now have access, via the Commercial Driver License Information System, to information about the Medical Examiner’s Certificate and identity of the medical examiner who performed the examination. Electronic access will enable FMCSA and states’ enforcement personnel to detect certain patterns or anomalies concerning the source of medical certificates through queries of the licensing databases at any time rather than being limited to checking for such issues during roadside inspections and compliance reviews."

Re: Farmers, CDL and Medical Certificate

Guys sounds to me like we are implementing regulations that will fit with the the GPS satallite tracking system planned for every interstate traveling commercial vehicle.  Which probably will be followed by similar controls for all other vihicles.

Man Mad
