Gender equality in EU insurance

The EU has ruled that by the end of next year, insurance rates for auto and life insurance must be gender neutral.  That is, rates for women which reflect women's lower accident rates and longer life, must raise by about 20% while men's rates will drop about 10%.  Different rates is gender inequality, says the European Union.

If they also require equal pay for equal work - as we sought via the ERA in America - I have no problem with that.

When my kids became driving age my insurance agent who is a personal friend explained something to me.  He said the rates are lower for girls even though in his experience the girls were more likely to be involved in wrecks than boys.

Re: Gender equality in EU insurance

To be honest, boys have been hostorically seen as greater risk-takers than girls.  With the way things are today, I think instead of helping guys calm down any, we've allowed girls to go wild and get way more reckless.  There probably is very little difference anymore.

Let's take a poll of just our own kids:  We have one boy and two girls.  Zero dustups for the male, one each for the females.

3 kids  G B G   1 mishap for each one   But the oldest girl was at fault in hers and sent 2 people to the hospital.  Youngest girl wasn't at fault in hers.  Son had a car drive into the side of him that was getting out of the way of an emergency vehicle.  He got cited as the cop said he should have slowed down and let the person who drove into him get in line ahead of him.  I might add the cop and the offending driver were neighbors.

Do you think we'll get equal health insurance benefits? They can get Viagra and we can't get the pill.

Re: Gender equality in EU insurance

I spent a lot of years when i was doing "the world's most important job" as a stay-at-home mom, eligible for $250 a year for an IRA, when Mike could contribute $2000.  It made me feel like 1/8 of a human being.

Lots of places where girls and women are still not treated as equals to men...but, at least we can rest assured now that it costs us all more equally!
