How Farmers Will Be Affected By AgroTerrorism

If agroterrorism ever gets to be an issue, you can bet that the government will get involved big time.  One of the things that will be likely to happen is more traceability.  The feds probably won't care what variety of corn you grow, but they may be very interested in which field and bin it passed through.

The longer the food chain, the more vulnerable, so you can look for more vertical integration which will give the various players more knowledge and control of products and processes.  The big packers and growers may use public and government concerns as a reason and basis for exercising more vertical control from planning to planting to production to processing.

A lot of our food supply right now is of the just in time management method.  If we have examples of agroterrorism causing a decline in confidence in oranges, meat, grains or other foods, big companies may find it useful to have a stock on hand that will keep the pipeline flowing until a reserve can be built up.  That implies more contracting farther out and fits into a planned, managed vertical integration system.

Re: How Farmers Will Be Affected By AgroTerrorism

Large grain companies have already been exposed to additional bio-terrorism rules

we run mock recall drills a couple of times per year and try to figure out exactly where a load of corn was put in our storage bins and when it may have been pulled from storage to the process area and used to make products

I can tell you the greatest effect on grain producers....they will have to start signing their names on inspection and scale tickets in a truly LEGIBLE fashion.......when we try to straighten out some minor issues, our single biggest headache is figuring out who signed the tickets !!

Re: How Farmers Will Be Affected By AgroTerrorism

Those of us heavily into animal ag have alreqdy gotten used to premises ID numbersand traceability. It got promoted to us as health- related ( i.e., scrapie tagging and such). Still, not much happened in this vein until the 9/11 era.

I recall raising Hades at the state in severla do fernces, for releasing identifying information, along with maps to our door, of every hog farm in this very hog- populous state. Why not juat conduct a courtesy tour for anti- ag and terrorist organizations? One vet was really on- board with my remarks.

Now, the EPA has done the same thing in a national database, which it had no legal authority to construct, but it did anyway, then released to the same ilk. Why make it this easy to compromise the food supply of the nation? Now, let us turn our minds to the several talks we've had here about UAS....

As someone recently said, " A nation conceived by geniuses, but run by idiots."

On the line of thought about verticalization, Jim, the fact that our ginormous intergator has control over millions of the animals it harvests each year makes perfect sense, from both traceability and security perspectives. Every input is under the company's paw, except drinking and wash water.

If I was the pivotal entity between consumers and producers, i would want as much oversight as possible, wouldn't you?

I 'm sure they positioned themselves on the part about not being liable for the drinking water analisis ---150 ppm of nitrate near a local feedlot groundwater mont.well and nobody wants to take the responsability including Nebraska DEQ ---to much regulation for drinking water ???? Tax payer "equip  $$$" well spent !!!!
