Re: I have a property tax question.

garlin your absolutely right ... property taxes are the most discriminatory tax we have the vast majority of the population does not pay property tax and votes for it every time...

It is near impossible to change it.  It is the ultimate "bleed the rich" tax.  Most of the people we keep voting into office want to make all other forms of taxation more like it.  Even straight income tax at the federal level now pays the poor who pay no income tax, a cash bonus for being poor...  in addition to all the aide programs available.  A change geared to shifting assets from those who have to............

Here in Sw ks in a town of 20K population the property taxes are getting so high that homes priced above 160K have a lot of trouble selling because the annual property tax approaches a level that is unaffordable.   close to $300 per month just property tax.  Owners complain but when homes stop selling we have a problem...  That is what happens when you have a lot of county and local spending because the tax base is high and then shut down the oil and gas industry....

Kansas has a land use property tax formula for agriculture...... The next two years we get to see what the decreasing grain prices will do to the formula///////

Vast majority of our voters don't own property so try voting out a new school ?     My savings is in the same place yours is ....  Wise move but the politically correct have an envy complex that is strong enough to make you pay for the needs of the community...

Sales tax is still the fairest tax locally

Re: I have a property tax question.

Mostly agree, except for the sales tax. It is a regressive tax hitting the poorest taxpayer the hardest. An individual making 150k or more pays a smaller percentage of disposable income on a sales tax than someone living on 30k, which primarily goes towards basic necessities.

I called " Shenanigans!", while on a river basin boat tour yearsago.  The state prison farm's cows were shitting in " my" river.  I had a no-discharge permit, for hogs miles from it.

Which state is that?

Where are you where the basic necessities such as food, clothing, rent, etc are subject to sales tax?

Here in MN, the land of 10,000 taxes where they have found a way to tax virtually everthing you earn,

own, consume, look at, etc....even the vultures here exempt basic necessities from sales tax.

Re: I have a property tax question.

Yes, One Million Dollars...and I`m being kind because it can tally up to alot more.  Okay, I`m not making any judgements on if the average teacher is worth that, it`s something everyone will have to decide on their own.  Alright, this is Iowa I`m talking about but let`s say a superintendent has to let go of some teachers by giving them early retirement at 55.  Well, when they retire they get 80% of their last paycheck so if it`s $50,000 they get $40,000 each year in retirement.  If they are retired 25 years and live to 80...$40,000 X 25 years  = One million smackeroos.

If they make $65,000, that`d be $52,000/year and collect for 35 years that`s $1.8 million.   Ask your state senator or state rep in Iowa, they`ll tell you.  With these legacy costs, Stockton California here we come!
