Jim - It was one of the only things I could do - The Doc gave pretty good orders not to use my arm - then Add Drill Sargent Wife keeping an eye on me - as well as Norm And J and it was either sit in the office and post or sit on the front porch with the new pup on my lap - Now on a good day - there might be 4 or 5 cars go by - it was pretty exciting -

I could post a picture of it - what is it they say ? A pictue is worth a thousand words . but some might not like to see it .

I have 3 brothers, 2 work on the farm. 1 doesn't like to but will when asked, usually when someone is sick. When the neighbor was fighting cancer my brothers would just go do what needed done, I spent the better part of 2 vacations working on his farm. The best part, no one ever said a word about payment. His wife or mother would insist they cook us lunch, that and a thank you was all it took.

Nice to know we have neighbors and family that would just do what needs done because it needs doing.

Ken, this is a very important post. 

We all realize that farming is among the most dangerous p[rofessions, yet think we are bulletproof.  We often work through the pain, tell ourselves to "walk it off".  The really bad stuff always happens to someone else. 

I have started having some important conversations with Mike.  We are trying to formulate a plan.  I think it is much like the succession plan, but compressed and on steroids.

Thanks Kay - I was lucky to have great help thats been here a good while - In the past few years - I have added responsiblies for the to do - As in J - he do's pretty good with the dryer - yet I have not taught him everything he needs to know about it - You will laugh on this one - but he don't know how to start it - it is hooked to a air system and there steps you have to do to light it up - just little things - but he do's good on monitoring it as far as what to do if its dumping to dry or wet - After this year - J and Norm both know a whole lot more to greaseing and up keep on the combine -  I truely believe that everybody needs to know each others jobs on the farm - no matter how big or how small - and for the ones paying them - the little tricks to the trade - I let them tackel a few jobs with out me - I would just set there - and as I got the rim rams = ( just a few minutes ) I would say let me give you a hint on how to do it .  As Jim and others said - it was something little that got big - and will still be a month before its healed up - with luck

The Doc is pretty dang good - he has done a lot of this type work before + hips and knees - yet he told me from the start - the elbow area is the hardest to heal - they even had it bandaged up so I could just move my arm - maybe a few inchs either way . The big problem was sleeping -  I needed to keep it up because my hand would swell - I tryied other pillows then one night I layed down with my Dobie - she layed right next to me and as I petted her - I layed my arm over her - DANG Ken ! it didn't hurt ! She was just right to keep my arm up and she would never move , she is still my 4 legged care giver  

As others have said about neighbor - We have some good ones too - somebody would check in everyday to see if I needed anything or help - to them - thank you

Good to hear you're healing up!  And, good, meaningful thread -- something to think about.

As Ken pointed out, maintenance is the primary concern.  I have a brother, sister and 2 sons that can and do

help during planting and harvest season.  They can handle the equipment but knowing what things should

sound like when working correctly is a big part of sensing when something is going wrong.  Being proactive

with maintenance helps but as with many things there is no substitute for experience.

I have a soon to be teenage grandson that loves to help as well.  If it has a motor and a steering wheel he

wants to drive it.  We may be able to have 4 generations in the field next year.
