The high bidder is offering more than anyone else on the planet. If the seller is really wanting or needing to sell that day, it is a good thing for him or her that the high bidder is there.

I think there are circumstances, esp. in the 80s, when there are legitimate arguments that lenders could have worked more with the debtor. Banks forcing the issue led to more sales and a vicious cycle. Everyone may have come out better if more patience shown.
Generally no reason to think ill of the buyers though. Also gives new blood a chance at things.
