K-289, you`re talking to a guy that believes 70-120yrs after the state of Israel (any time now) we will see the antichrist and the 2nd coming of Jesus. I`m sure they`ll be John Deeres in Heaven and Chevy and a few Dodges and most Republican voters will be eating manna. But, just curious what makes you so sure of the imminent demise of Deere & Company here on earth?

Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
John Deere will probably stay afloat selling parts for 4000 series tractors.
Those babies will never die - just keep overhauling them.
That and the classic tractor rebuilds should keep the company alive.
Combines seem to be disposable - good tractors live on and on.

Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
What was "interesting" in the GM bailout was it was about employee pensions. It cost north of $100,000 in legacy costs for each GM retired employee. Had GM went bankrupt, another company or investment group would`ve bought them out and they would`ve continued making Chevies (the best automobile on earth) without the pension obligation.

Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
I remember when Montgomery Ward built the first mall in Iowa City, followed soon after by Sears. The uptown started emptying out. Now the uptown is a student ped mall where you do whatever students do - I don't go there. Then the bigger malls started clobbering the little malls. Wards went broke and Sears went to the big mall. Then Walmart came in and everyone finally started screaming that the little guy was being busted. Duh. And has been said, the big mall got TIF but not me or my farmer neighbors.
Evolution, as you have said. Always chasing value. To some that is soley price. Thsoe of us who bought Sears tools now can buy Mac or Harbor Freight, take your pick.
All states are hurting for money and we need to raise taxes. I'd rather see sales taxes increased than land or income taxes. Infrastructure is falling apart and we can't build roads only by printing federal moeny.
