Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
That`s interesting Bruce, never heard Sears sold breeding stock. I know that you used to could order a house from them. I once thumbed through a replica 1911 Sears catalog and that was neat, you could order revolvers, I doubt there was a background check and the only "waiting period" was when Sam Drucker called saying "you have a package from Sears" 🙂
But up in our attic, I still have a old floppy disk 256k Tandy computer from Radio Shack, I joke with the kids one day they`ll go on Antiques Road Show with it. 🙂
But it`s funny, if you went back in time to 1985 and could give someone vague financial advice that "computers in everyone`s home and pocket and retail will be conducted through the mail". That 1985 person would probably buy Radio Shack, Sears and Montgomery Ward stock, which hindsight 20/20 wasn`t a good idea.

Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
It might be useful to have a store in a town of 3,000 but if you are 6'8", have a size 14E, wear a petite and like it in green polka dots or you have special dietary needs, you may not find it there. The internet will let you get precisely what you want at a reasonable price in many cases.
When we talk about paying the shipping, I can order a couple of bolts and have them delivered by UPS or USPS for around the cost it would take for me to take my time and drive to town to get them.
Besides, I look online for half an hour, find a rare part I want and order it. That saves the hour and a half it would take me to drive to town only to find out they didn't have it and if I ordered it I'd have to drive back to get it in a week.

Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
Yes. No going back. But it remains that the trend wasn’t necessarily natural evolution at every step. It wasn’t as if nobody noticed or mentioned it.
Trump has a point when he says that there are no taxes collected. But that conflicts with a Ton of conservative dogma.
He, of course, is taking a shot at Bezoos and his ownership stake in the Washington Post. And what Amazon and other outfits of the sort have done to commercial real estate.

Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
Amazon pays sales taxes in all states where there is one. Apparently some e-commerce sites don't but I haven't paid attention to who. Some of those are second party sellers on AMZN.
They don't pay a lot of Federal income tax because they don't make a lot of money relative to their size- currently trading at 250X income.

Re: Monkey Wards and Amazon
If I recall, Amazon is charging sales tax in Iowa now. I'd rather pay sales tax than property or income tax, and the fact is we are underfunded for what we want the government to do.
