BA, I'd love to not purchase Chinese "goods",  The problem being its hard to find stuff not made in China.  Even the "Montezuma" toolboxes ended up being made in china.  And now the company is out of business.  I think there are other companies selling lookalike toolboxes.  I'm not sure where they are built.

So   if  retail  items  are  made  in  other nations besides  U S A ,  net  gain  being  -  ? 

The  board  of  directors  of   the  manufacture   made  the  decisions  to  off  shore  the  process ,  not  the  consumer ,   SO  round  &  round  we  go  &   where   we  end  up ,  only  our  check  off  $$$  know   - ?

Hey Clayton, I think Snap-on is or recently was US made.  Elite says they are US made.

What I find is strange is a product like a toolbox that is bent sheet metal and welded, how it`s supposedly made all that much cheaper moving a factory 10,000 miles away and even though they pay their workers $2/hr or $2/day you wouldn`t think there`s all that much savings rather than making it right here where it`s purchased and pay the US worker $25/hr.

But all these Libs claiming to be so concerned about the environment.  They really ought to be on board with stopping the flow of cheap Chinese goods because of all the dirty fuel that a container ship burns

The UK newspaper the Daily Mail published the alarming allegation that the 16 biggest ships in the world produce more pollution than all the world’s cars. If true, this would certainly change many people’s perspective on global warming as more often than not cars are singled out as a key contributor to greenhouse gases whilst the shipping industry is almost never mentioned. So, is this allegation true? And, if so, is it a game changer for the way in which we tackle climate change?

It’s all in the oxides

The short answer to the question, ‘is this allegation’ true is, quite simply, ‘yes’. And this is because of the higher levels of sulphur oxides (SOx) and nitrous oxides (NOx) that large container vessels produce when compared to cars. It is certainly true that the world’s largest container vessels produce more SOx and NOx than all the world’s cars. This difference in oxide emissions is exacerbated by the fact that modern cars are designed to be cleaner and greener and to produce fewer emissions. Simultaneously, however, container ships are producing more and more emissions. The gap is widening.

SOx and NOx are very harmful to the environment in many different ways. For example, the two key causes of acid rain are – you guessed it – suphur dioxide and a variety of nitrous oxides. These oxides can also dramatically adversely effect ecosystems. For example, they can kill marine life and cause respiratory illnesses in humans.

The free trader`s only leg to stand on is that when we get flooded with cheap Chinese junk, that someone in the US on a MacDonald`s wage can afford a lot of crap that they ordinarily wouldn`t afford on that income.  And if you are in the lucky few that produce something such as soybeans, that is something that the Chinese haul back after dumping off their Walmart junk.

Ba you can't baffle me by applying logic to illogical reality...... US socialists hate or love for ideas has no pattern or logic.

Clayton ---thanks for a very local example......... and what did happen at "montezuma Tool"?

1.  The greed of higher profit share, forced outsourcing production ?

2.  The stress of a labor pool that is overwrought by producing more than 1 box a week?

3.  Lack of stomach for business management?

4.  The lack of legal strength to fight the theft of a good idea, and the flooding of the american market of "truck" toolboxes?

5   The death of a market for farmer lookalike trucks accessories (farm and small town population decline) ?

6.  The end of patent protection for a decent idea and the lack of a second idea?  

Being a greedy capitalist is a hard job.  But I am a curious sort and that is "one of ours".

a bit more humor

 Can a business that produces a product survive on only one product..... probably not, but if they had followed the monsanto model and made toolboxes in green, orange, blue, and red and convinced the public that cotton farmers could only use an orange one, corn farmers a green one, soybean farmers a blue one, and cattle farmers a red one.  Now,demand quadruples, prices become a "whatever" process. farm trucks become part of the rainbow coalition -- advertise them and  project them to be industrially required for safety and an answer for businesses not hiring enough minorities.....

Follow the first bit of advertising in Mother Jones with a public  stock sales on Wall street in rainbow colors.  Now expand into color coded trasportation and commodity storage and your rich enough to move the company to Ireland and try to ignore the phantom reality that rainbow colors and repainted tool boxes(and the painted matching tools) will in fact cause cancer...... as we all knew ..."montazuma's revenge" would eventually.

SW, You forgot the wheat farmers.  I know, us wheat farmers can't afford one so we just throw tools in the back of the pickup.  I suggest red for the wheat farmers, to go along with our bottom line growing it.  then the cattlemen can have a black one to symbolize all the profit in cattle.  Would I need a different one for each crop I grow?  That would get expensive!!

As to montezuma tool, I don't know all the details, but...  What it looks like to me is the next generation took over, and they bought into the notion that shifting production to china would cut labor cost and increase profit.  I think they actually had a capable labor force at home.  The rest of your points probably all played a role to some extent.  I feel like quality suffered with the chinese production.  The numerous trips to China got old, and market share dropped (These are both speculation on my part), leading to the decision to get out while the gettin was good.

Hope your getting the rain you need.  Last weeks rain was a tremendous boost to the wheat.  Field work is starting to resume here.  Just need to pick your fields.

Also,  Wondering  if  there  is  a  tariff  on  German  Ag  chemicals  or  is  that  why  we  have  a  lop  sided  pharmaceutical  trade  balance  deficit  - ?
