Farmers around here tiled out most serious drainage problems 80 years ago. Most of the current tiling is aimed at increasing productivity or addressing isolated pockets like a side hill seep. The hope is that with a more consistent soil water profile, they can get that last 10% of productivity out. In my own opinion, not based on study, farmers have money and those not buying more land are tiling their own and even tiling rented land. There is a lot of bigger equipment, too.
Iowa State has been pretty active in tiling studies the last 10 years after having let their department almost disappear earlier.
