Reducing Trans Fats
The FDA is putting out new guidelines on reducing trans fats by eliminating partially hydrogineated oils in food.
Some claim this will lead to better health
A feed industry spokesman appreciated that it doesn't apply to livestock feed.
It may help health but will reduce shelf life
What do you think? Do you care?

Re: Reducing Trans Fats
Jim, something is really wrong in America. Sugarfree didn't solve it, and actually may have made matters much worse. Lowfat, ditto.
Transfats have bought foods more time in storage, but perhaps shortened lifespans in the process.
We have switched to virtually all olive and coconut oils for cooking. Some specialty oils like toasted sesame for stirfrying.
Haven't used solid shortening in decades. If it needs a fat that is solid at room temp, it gets butter, maybe lard, depending upon final product.
A food isn't supposed to last in storage forever. Not enough people evidently read enough labels, so a ban might protect society in general from the healthcare costs.

I think that`s smart using olive oil where you can, one nasty substance is that "Canola" crap they`ve been pushing.

I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years the "experts" say that transfats aren't so bad for us after all

Re: Reducing Trans Fats
We have basically pitched all but olive and coconut oils, plus things like toasted seasme, as said. I actually own an olive tree in Italy, a gift from friends who travel there every fall.

Not Palm Oil
The conservators of the 7300 or so wild orangutans are not happy with the new situaiton. Palm oil is favored by some and that means cutting rain forest and creating palm plantations.
