Re: Rural Kansas Dying

Trouble is corn yields and ethanol efficiency have out stripped the ethanol demand.  We`re all swinging for the bleachers every year on every square foot on yield ...and that`s a good thing, it`s raw unsympathetic capitalism, how ever there is collateral damage and that is the plywood on the storefronts that 40yrs ago were streaming with shoppers buying shirt made with pride in North Carolina ...back then "Walmart???   What`s a Walmart?".

Yet this week the stock market is betting on those new companies that will deliver restaurant food from any place to you wherever. From any restaurant to anywhere.
“Let Em eat cake” comes to mind.

Re: Rural Kansas Dying

Ba. I’m with ya on ethanol. But it’s still a head shaker that our only green energy success story.(defined as profitable without fed handouts). - is dependent on fossil fuels to survive.
Walmart. Schmallmart.
The real issue is America hires its work done because work is embarrassing and Demeaning.
We are now proud if we don’t work.
We work out because we don’t work.

Diesel polluted more is a not true. More efficient longer life Pollutes more per gallon or more per mile. Or per hour? Uses less fuel so polluted less.

Re: Rural Kansas Dying

I been rereading this discussion...... A lot in this...... and some very good comments.

I am preparing some thoughts on it

BA  much appreciated...

This one and "whats the plan for next year" are a couple of the most compelling thoughts we have looked at for a while.

Sometimes subjects like fad marketing or economic choices need some time in the rear view mirror to see more clearly...

Find it interesting that kansans would be considered complacent... or whatever the term a "costal" educator might have used.

Kansans are many things but gullible is not the main one.. Yet we support anyone who thinks they can bleed some feel good cash out of the front range.

But he won't get to be governor claiming we can all make that work.  Most of kansas is a tough climate.  To far from the gulf for consistent rain and too far south for consistent snow.  Most western ks counties have been "depopulating" since the 1920s(thanks to homestead act 1862 providing overpopulation as needed).  What is left is too sharp to be coned and has little time for those who are not work brittle.  It is a tough political climate especially for a writer with such radom cliché s.

Re: Rural Kansas Dying

There's quite a few states in the same boat....even are towns now with mostly vacant rural homes.

young folks moved out of these rural areas for decades...over time there just aren't many folks left.

theyre all in the bigger cities making some dough.

Re: Rural Kansas Dying

Last week's vacation with a couple grandson's took us thru SD and western NE to Frontier Days in Cheyenne.

Then to Colorado thru quite a variety of countryside.

(Picked up a Cannabis Tourism Map if anyone is interestedSmiley Very Happy)

It served as a good reminder of the rugged nature of farming in those areas.

Whether it's the sand hills in NE or the valley north of Del Norte, CO there are

many areas that would break some of us used to black dirt and uninterrupted cell phone service.

Re: Rural Kansas Dying

Did you "inhale" the information??

Colorado has a "colorful" history of amusement venues back to the mining and brothel days.  Cannabis is the modern version.

Our grandkids will be taking their kids to see Cannabis Ghost Towns eventually when the cash vein plays out.

Potato salad from Pheonix................ Amazon should have that to you in about 2 hours and 35 minutes....
