World food prices rise for third straight month, UN group reports

Seems like farmers take alot of flak for raising Food Prices, but the article below states that overall food prices in our country will only go up by 3% in 2013. Just something to mention if someone gives you a rough time being a farmer. Article is below:

World food prices rise for third straight month, UN group reports

World food prices rose in April for the third straight month driven by rising costs for dairy products, the United Nations said on Thursday.

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization said the food price index, which measures monthly price changes in cereals, dairy, meat, sugar and oilseeds, averaged 215.5 points in April 2013, up 2 points, or 1 percent, from the revised figure of 213.2 points in March. At the April level, the index is only 9 percent below the peak reached in February 2011.

After rising last year during the U.S. drought, global food prices fell late in 2012. But since January they have risen 2.4 percent largely on fears crop production will not be enough to replenish low stockpiles.

FAO said similar to the March food price rise, the April increase “was driven almost exclusively by a sharp rise in dairy quotations, as meat prices rose marginally while those of the other food commodities fell.” The agency said the rise in dairy was the result of a steep decline in New Zealand’s milk production, following an abnormally prolonged dry period at the start of the year.

In its month report, FAO said global corn production is forecast to rise 10 percent to 960 million tones. The bulk of the increase is expected in the United States, the world’s largest producer, where corn plantings are expected to reach their highest level since 1936.

U.S. food prices are seen rising about 3 percent this year, less than previously forecast. The U.S. Agriculture Department revised the increase in food prices in late April to 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent from an earlier forecast of between 3 and 4 percent.

The Des Moines, Iowa Paper in the farm section. They actually have some pretty good articles on farming and agriculture.
