You Owe Me A Living!

Supply management is rearing it's head again.  See this article which focuses on dairy farmers.

https://www.agriculture.com/news/business/farmers-increasingly-look-to-supply-management-to-steady-u...

Well, why not?  Somebody tells me what to grow and how much to grow.  They put some kind of floor on so I always get at least a minimum income.  Cargill or ADM is told to buy my corn.  What could be better?  No stress.  That would let us do away with crop insurance.  In fact, maybe the government would just send me a check and I could grow or not grow as I chose.

No sense in letting the consumer decide how much to pay or what to use.  What does the consumer know?  It's not smart to let farmers grow as much as they want, what happens if they go broke?

Oh.

These socialist programs go against everything America was built on. The people don't owe a business owner a living.

Re: You Owe Me A Living!

K-289, yeah I drove down a public highway that I pay taxes and tolls on, paid the insane cost of plates and insurance on a semi, jumped through all the DOT and IFTA rules regs in a country that I fought for... yeah dam me.

Re: You Owe Me A Living!

Just picking nits, I suppose, but how did you rationalize putting insurance in there?

Re: You Owe Me A Living!

Insurance  would  be  private  -  you  need  50 +  trucks ,  then  you  get  a  B T O  discount  break  on  the  regs  &  tolls ,  &  insurance - - -

Not  sure  if  you  checked  into  the  grain  storage  financing  deal  I  read  about  that  included  semi's  -  low  interest  - several  year  gov  deal  ?

Re: You Owe Me A Living!

Bruce, its against the law to drive on a public road without insurance.... I don't believe anybody owes me a living wage. Nobody puts a gun to a farmers head and tells them they have to farm. Setting a strict cap on production would only drive up the cost of food, good for farmers, bad for the other 98% of America.

Tell me why America owes a farmer production limits so the price of food and fuel goes up?

Re: You Owe Me A Living!

K-289, I did what most on this board could never do.... start from scratch. I started with 0 equipment and 35 acres I rented from family. I now farm close to 200 acres of my own corn, custom harvest for others, raise several head of beef cattle, work a full time job, and Im under 35 years old. I have no desire to have 50 trucks. I suppose the government should limit truck drivers to 3 loads a week so the price of freight can go up and every truck driver can make good money.....

Missing  the  point  B  T  O  trucking  company  will  enjoy  financial  gimmies,   thru  government  interactions,  &  then  relish  the  endowments  of  on  stage  proclaiming  conservative  idealism ,  not  bestowed  proportionately  on  our  caste system  - - -

Hats  off to  your  success, although  there  just  might  a  similar  story  or  two  liken  to  yours ,  I  familiar  with one - - -

If  you  review  history  of  not  so  long  ago ,  several  states  were  clamoring  to  put  in  place  dairy   operations,  migrating  from  west  coast  locations  with    local - state gubermet  incentives  - - -
