Industrial ag and niche farming

As Temple Grandin said yesterday in her address at the annual Iowa Farm Bureau

convention in Des Moines,

"You’ve got to have large-scale commercial producers so livestock can be

raised at reasonable price. But there’s a big niche market, too. Big ag and

niche ag have to stop attacking each other.”

I don't know many conventional farmers who begrudge their

niche farmer neighbors from making a livelihood for their families.

Agriculture is a big tent. There is room for all. My farm community

would benefit from more farmers, no matter what they grow.

More farmers mean more families, and more families populate

the schools,  churches,  4-H clubs, and all of those

things that make for a good quality of rural life.
