I had the same problem for years. It was always worse when it got cold, but in that time, the mice multiplied like crazy! I tried traps and poison but the clean-up was always so grim. In the end, I did the same as others on this thread. I bought three cats. They took care of the mice and there have only been a few occasions where I've had to clean up the aftermath!
