New bin size advice

One of my next inprovements is going to be to add another bin. Would like to get something at least 25000 bushel. How big can I reach with my 62' auger. I'm not ready to put up a leg yet. I know I could look it up somewhere. Was hoping someone knew this off the top of their head. I like to be able to talk somewhat intelligently before I go to the dealer.

Here are two sources, one for telling you size of auger needed and the second for bin sizes and dimensions you need to find out what auger you will need.

I can tell you right now your auger will not fit a 25,000 bu bin. Your auger will top out in the 15,000 bu sizes.

Re: New bin size advise

You could put a roof auger on the bin.  Then you just have to reach the height of the side wall, not to the peak.

I would forget the roof augers. Had two bins with augers, nothing but trouble  buy a big auger that will reach the hieght you want.

Bought a 13 in, 95 ft farm king. It will reach my 65,000 bu. bin. Will unload 600 bu. truck in 6 min. Very happy now

Re: New bin size advise

Buck..I've got a 6 ring (42") Butler bin that is 36' diameter (20,000bu.), it sits on a pad about a foot high...and I can reach it with a 62' swing auger with a hydraulic undercarriage. I'm not sure one with a standard carriage would reach...because the auger is only about 2 foot off the roof...and it pretty much follows the roof line. You may...be able to build a 42' x 5 ring bin that the same auger would fit...but concrete gets expensive compared to trading augers.

Re: New bin size advise

I know you said you didn't want a leg at this time, but with the Section 179 going back to $500,000 it might be worth checking in to.

Re: New bin size advise

I have three 36 foot bins that hold 20,000 bushels.    I use a 71 foot auger to reach, barely reach I might add....!     Agree with a previous poster.....you don't want to mess with roof augers, nothing but a pain.    You should just buy another auger.....

Re: New bin size advise

A bigger auger would require moving utility poles to get in and out of the driveway. also would have to cut two trees to get into rental farm. Maybe I just need to bite the built and start looking at legs

Re: New bin size advise

While capacity is a major factor when adding storage don't fail to plan the next several steps/stages of expansion.  Trucks never get shorter, combine capacity is not going to decrease, if we believe what seed companies tell us our yields "should" see exponential growth in the future.  It's all too evident in my area to see systems that were perfectly matched to the operation 15-20 years ago only to be essentially obsolete and nearly inaccessible today.

The list of planning considerations is oftentimes seemingly endless but egress, power capacity, drainage, expansion potential are top of the list items

Step 1 would be to eliminate ALL overhead power lines.  Trenches, conduit and copper may seem expensive but imagine setting up that auger minus an arm...

Re: New bin size advise

FWIW - I'd sure try to find the dimension chart from your specific auger manufacturer, and perhaps even your specific model of auger.  If you or your dealer ever added a section onto the auger, that would make a big difference as well.

Thirty years ago I ran into a situation where a "Brand X" auger chart showed my brand new auger would work on my brand new bin, foundation & all, and then discovered the tires on my auger were designed to crush the sidewall before the dicharge centered itself on the roof.
