axial fan noise

I am doing some grain bin "remodeling" for another person. We will be adding new fans and heaters to a couple bins. I realize that centrifugal fans are much quieter (i personally have 4) , but was asked to look into axials because of the cheaper cost. My question is, are there any axial fans that the noise is noticeably less objectionable than others? Sukup? GSI? Shivvers?  I have a bin on a rented farm with those 70's era rolfes fans and they are , hands down, the worst screamers ever. My LP driver will second that observation.

Re: axial fan noise

...you couldn't get me to buy a new axial fan for drying on a bet. Even if the only advantage was reduced noise I would buy a centrifucal. I would buy used centrifucals...sandblast and paint them up...then buy the newest heater I could find for them if cost was an issue.

Re: axial fan noise

I can hear my cousin's MFS they can't hear my GSI. They live about a mile and a half away But their's is much older.

Re: axial fan noise

I understand Buck, I live in a small town of about 300 people and I can sometimes here those MF's across the street from me as well. Seems like Friday and Saturday nights between May and August are the worst. LOL

Re: axial fan noise

pup, i don't disagree, but just doing what they ask. The bins are not near me, but there is a neighbor about 400 yards from them. Hope to , at least, point them away. I've seen people put up a sheet of plywood to deflect the sound.

Re: axial fan noise

Nice shaggy! Nice. My neighbors probably say the same when I'm yelling at the kids. Luckily my neighbors are pretty old.

Re: axial fan noise

I have seen the plywood "barrier" trick too. Takes the sound down from a B52 to a DC3.

Also I have seen a metal 5-sided "box" that is insulated with something. It sits around the fan opening deadening the sound resonably well. Not too sure about the fire proof side of it, if it is a burner fan. It was a commercial model so it must be fire proof.

Re: axial fan noise

My 10 horse Sukup are very loud.  An old cntrifugal I inherited is much better.  When I upgraded one fan, I got a centrifugal.  Life is too short.  I would not put in an axial if I could help it.

Re: axial fan noise

The diffrence between axial and centrifugal is less than the cost of a top of line digital hearing aid. Trust me, I know from expereince.  Likewise bad feelings between neighbors ! I would not consider an axial unless the nearest neighbor was 2 mile away....Soyroy.
