paint

Need to spruce up the farmstead.

Getting conflicting ideas on what to
Paint.
First..will use a spray...looking at a Wagner
Unit, a small "commerical" unit.

First, an old barn that hasn't been painted
For 50 years.
I'm thinking oil and know it will soak up
Like a sponge.
Another place say they have a latex with
Oil in it!
Yet another says the new all in one with
Primer, latex paint and urathene in it.
$35 a gallon and lifetime guar .

Then a painted metal bld . One said latex
With oil in it, I'm thinking either rustilium or ace's version of the name brand rust.
Really no rust on bld.

Lastly I'm not good with ladders anymore, Hyde tools have two poles that go to 12 foot.
One holds your spray gun, the other one
Has a detatchable spray time

Re: paint

I don't like ladders either, but believe controlling a sprayer on a pole is going to be a tough assignment.  If really serious about doing a respectable job, I would rent a mobile manlift, or if going cheap would rent scaffolding and move it around with a loader.  A friend has cycled thru several cheaper Wagners and finally bought a high priced model.  Said it was money well spent; the small commercial unit should be OK.  Just don't try to be too cheap; can bring major headaches.  Thought I heard they were eliminating oil based paints except for farmstead applications and were considering banning that usage also.  Certainly would want to use an oil based paint on wood and would likely avoid latex on metal if rust is showing.  If base paint is solid and only faded, latex would be OK on metal.   Depends somewhat on the reason for painting; sprucing it up a little for selling or actually trying to preserve it for another 50 years.  Remember it is a lot tougher to remove/fix a blotched paint job than it is to do right the first time.

Re: paint

Definitely get a mobile manlift or a scissor lift. It will save a lot of time, and is safe.
