Gotta Love Long's Pork Commentary

You have to love the optimism from Jim Long's pork commentary but I got one question.  Has he ever said the future doesn't look bright for the independent hog guy?

I personally think the fat lady sang on independent hog production.  We as Americans should be ashamed that we let corporate America take over another portion of our food supply!

Not just the food supply, but the entire marketplace. WalMarts and Starbucks in about every town run the backbone businesses into bankruptcy. Then the towns become just another 'burb.

Re: Gotta Love Long's Pork Commentary

We are still an independent hog producer. And we fight every day to stay alive. Surrounded by big hog farms that are loaded up with PRSS right now. It is sad that everyone around us has thrown in the towel and gave up due to the large operator and packers. Just another egg disaster waiting to happen. I am on the beginning farmer program with the USDA and my guy said " it is pointless to stay in hogs, the time has gone for us on the farm to raise animals of our own." Pretty sad when the guy assigned to help beginning farmer says that.

I was a witness to that very same advice being offered up to young producers by a high ranking official in the Minnesota Department of Agriculture....in 1999.

Re: Gotta Love Long's Pork Commentary

Unless you are going to own them all the way to the consumer there hasn't been any money in independent hogs since 97, right?  And owning them all the way to the consumer is more capital intensive than putting up an eight thousand head finisher before you start talking about the complexities of getting the production, processing, and marketing to mesh.

Thats the tough spot. We own from birth till death. Just don't process to grocery

Re: Gotta Love Long's Pork Commentary

The hog industry in the US is a shame.  We are an affluent enough society to have had a different result.  GIPSA and the DOJ could have done their job.  This isn't about efficiency.  Its about market power.

Don't think for a minute that I'm advocating owning the pigs further to the consumer because that is extremely capital and management intensive.  There are virtually no processing options for "small" producers in this country and what are there are so cost prohibitive relative to the industry standard that you would be stuck in the extreme niches of the marketplace.  Its a huge learning curve and an expensive one or at least it was for me.

Now smithfield fired some employees for inhuman treatment of hogs in Virginia---was on the farm news--another hurdle  for livestock ag to explain  --thanks to another BTO

Belarus, I find you post somewhat strange.  On this site everything is basically filled with he hate of socialism, etc.  The take over by big business is a natural progression of the capitalist system. I don't see why so many republicans on here get their hump over that.  Strange as it would be, if Obama stepped in to stop it, everybody would bark how he is interferring in private enterprise.  Tell me which side you sit on.

Re: Gotta Love Long's Pork Commentary

I'm a libertarian.  I don't believe in Corporations providing our answers any more than I believe the Government has the solution.  I have no representation in DC.

But I didn't think this post was complaining about the government.  I thought I was stating how Long's pork commentary is always optimistic for the independent producer even if no one thinks there is a future let alone a bright one.
