Well, very few I think 2% of hogs are sold on the "open market", probably during the crash of `98 at least maybe half were subject to market forces. "This time" will be interesting with the vertical intergration deal in place. Will packers just not renew the contracts? Will the packers hand out the magnifying glasses to point out the fine print where if "such and such" happens? I imagine it will "trickle down" to the hog house janitor, one guy that had a job managing a couple houses with a reputable producer, they didn`t provide tools or even lightbulbs at the razor thin margins of $8 corn...they just cut expense to the bone.
But this is what happens when you sort of have a "planned market". I suppose it goes good when pork is moving ..."sure send us some 300lb hogs...sure send us a overloaded pot ...no problemo". But, the supermarkets now call the shots, when they can`t move it, it`ll be a reverse domino effect. Hope it doesn`t happen, but it could.
