New Pork Powerhouses: More Midwest sows

That's the verdict in this year's Pork Powerhouses report from Betsy Freese. Looks like a good amount of expansion going on among the majority of the big boys in the hog business:

_____

The 25 largest U.S. pork producers grew by 84,000 sows this year, according to the 2011 Pork Powerhouses exclusive report. Ten of the companies on the list expanded, 12 reported the same number of sows, and three have fewer sows than last year (including the largest, Smithfield Foods).

I hope I make the list. Local vet said I was the second largest independant farrow to finish operation in german township. In the last 6 month I've increased farrowings by 600%.  Christensen bros. got nothin on me!

If you stay in this industry long enough you will entually be one of the largest only because you are one of the only ones left.    I'm one of the largest broiler owners in the country not because we are huge but simply because only a handful of companies own broilers in the US.
