Re: PED-V and contractors

Respectfully, as I think you know where I'm coming from and I''m not so sure that in the end you wouldn't rather prefer that it would have been thus. How big a problem such as that wild card passing the sentries been if what you still had was those 120 or however many sows it was up in Virginia and that was the whole and sum of your involvement in the pig business?  With thousands more like you all over the country, as nox alludes to? There would have been no reason for his sorry a$$ to have been on your place.

The entirety of this run of sophisticated diseases and complexes that go with them are things that circulated and re-circulated through the swine production universe BEFORE we had multiple sites segregated phased rearing and production. Probably as variants, as TGE might be to PED-V,  I'm quite certain that if some one had the impetus, resources and, of course, clearance and permission to run around the country and collect up old preserved blood samples, tissue samples and mabye most improtantly those numerous anti-serums that were so valuable to producers in the middle of the last century they would find anitbodies or closely related antibodies to nearly every crisis malady that has besieged the shining miracle that is modern day, integrated (sh!T..just  barely integrated....your umbrella holders  have assured that it has  gone long, long past the rather hard to acheive limits of the Packers and Stickyards Act...if it's not technically propreitary I'd be shocked to death...but then who could get at those documents?...about with as much luck as financial regulators had at gettting at Goldman Sachs and Countrywide stuff, even after they were out of business) momocultural, "be sure to cook it slow" cardboard....errr...pork industry.

Been asking around of a number people who are supposed to have the credientials (by their position...I know nothing of their backgounds in the pig business and can't find much to go on when they tell me about it other than which Ag College or Tech school they went to) about that manure.  Not so much the value, but the volatility re: PED of it.  THiose pits stay cool and don't catch any sunlight.  Back in teh hogs on nearly every farm TGE cycle, it would start it's winter spread as soon as the first few guys in the neighborhood gave the farrowing house a good cleaning an hauling and the gbirds feasted on the undigested material.

Cloose to half of the corn acres in some parts of the country get manure out of pits put on them.  Going to be intersting to watch this fall.

Considering the mode of transmission, manure management is another potential disease vector. Our systems are generally not deep pits, but the normal TGE cycle here has traditionally been that it breaks when the blackbirds pass through. Typically, a herd cycles every other year, with slugs of replacement gilts being susceptible.

It occurs to me that not only will crop guys miss the free input, which may not have yet been realized...but the many mouths they will not be feeding this year and probably beyond. But, go ahead and hate on us.

Hate has nothing to do with this or me or you  - shouldering  responsability for one's actions is what it is all about --- seems Smithfields timing was steller  ---

Or our industry in the USA has just been feeding spray dried porcine plasma from China that had really poor process control.  The rumor mill in this area said most farms broke three days after pigs went to hot deck nursery and started on the chinese spray dried blood.

Even I didn't figure we were crazy enough as a nation to be feeding pig blood from China.  We don't feed blood to our pigs but I don't think anyone is going to escape this disease.  It will be like living in fear of TGE on steroids every day.  Cause the info I've seen  this strain of corona doesn't die off in the environement like TGE does.  Lets hope maternal immunity is as good as TGE but it doesn't sound promising.

The data I'm seeing shows PED is a much more viable strain of the corona virus than the TGE strain of the corona virus.   Its not going to die in a pit or a lagoon!  They chased after a few pennies to be able to wean piglets at 10-14 days by feeding them pig blood from china and all of us are going to pay.  And then they have the gall to blame it on agroterrism instead of greed of multi-nationals.  Sickening!!!!!
