Buying used tractor - any tips?

Hello I am new to tractors and I need one that can spread dirt and gravel, use a post hole digger with and a brush hog. I have looked at some of the following tractors http://www.agriaffaires.co.uk/used/1/tractors.html and I am not sure which is right for me ? I am looking for a tractor which I can spread dirt and gravel, use a post hole digger with and a brush hog. J.D. 750,790,870 seem to be good models. I would like something that can be maneuvered easily in the forest and that I can operate easily. I need this for home use on 16 ac. I have looked in the $6500-$12,500 range used tractors. I don't want to buy a machine that is too small or too big. What are good hours to look for? What else should I look for when buying a used tractor so I don't buy a piece of junk? All help is appreciated.

Re: Buying used tractor - any tips?

I would say, buy a model where there`s a reputable dealer nearby for parts and service, when in doubt probably get a John Deere.  some breeds of tractors not everyone can work on, a shade tree mechanic might not be familiar and would take longer to learn how to fix $$$.  Some brands don`t have parts available, I`d say if you find a tractor you like, visit the dealer and ask about parts availabilty and maybe the shop guy could tell you problems that model might have..

If you look for oil leaks where it`s sitting, if it has front weights it probably was used to do heavy work, look at the drawbar if it`s new or egg shaped which means it had a hard life.  If it was repainted, probably hiding something.  Make sure hydraulics and pto work, go though all the gears, make sure oils aren`t milky.  When I buy a tractor and we come to a price, I usually say "i`ll drive it to my place and if it isn`t smoking, overheating or knocking...I`ll take it for the agreed price"  usually if it`s a good tractor that is no problem for them.

I`d say under 6,000 hrs has alot of life left.

Good Luck

I don't have any advice on which one you should buy, but as far as finding a selection and dealerships, use this one (and probably some other similar to it) to start with. https://machinerymarketplace.net/Equipment/Search. What I like about it is it has the nice Local Finder feature with map.
