Re: 30 foot header on 7720

Lateral tilt or contour master is where the head will float automatically independent of the throat or feeder. It works with the header height control.  In my part of iowa it has been on every new holland we've had for years. maybe since the late 80's. John deere sold it as an option and was not very common on their machines. (here anyway) It works well for cutting beans even in "flat" fields. I can't remember ever having a mechanical or electrical issue with it.

Thanks IDA, evidently that isn't a common feature around here or I'm way behind the times. I'd probably go with the later of the two. LOL

Hey Shag if you want to see why lateral tilt and contour master combines are popular in southern Ohio, pm me your email and I'll send a pic of what most of my ground looks like.

I would Buck, but then I'd be the only one to enjoy them. Just post up a couple.

Re: 30 foot header on 7720

even if the crop is standing, with a smaller head you can go faster and get as much or more done in a day

Re: 30 foot header on 7720

I always thought that too cloverleaf, but I've got a neighbor that says otherwise. He's got two identical combines, one with a 25' head and the other with a 30' head. He claims on normal standing crops the 30' head always cuts more bushels per day. On downed crops he said the 25' machine will out perform the 30' machine every time. Don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger, and haven't any knowledge of the comparison.

Re: 30 foot header on 7720

My original question was about a 30 foot header on a 7720. Now my question is about comparing my present 7720 with 222 header and the possibility of buying an 8820 with 30 foot header or maybe a 9600 with 30 foot header. I just finished my wheat and averaged 1.5 miles an hour. Are you saying a different combine with a 30 foot header would not cover more acres in a day if I traveled 1.5 miles an hour with it? I am projecting for every mile I cut I pick up an additional acre with the 30 foot compared to 22 foot.

Re: 30 foot header on 7720

I have a 1988 7720T2 with a 922 head.  I can run 4.2 mph in 55 bushel beans but usually go 3.6 mph.  I don't think I'd want anything bigger especially in our wheat which usually runs 65 to 80 bpa.  At 22 foot I can squeak between mailboxes on some moves.  Anything bigger and I'd have to drop the head for every move.

A 9600 is way more combine than a 7720. It will handle the 30 foot head and you will get much more done.
