Best tractor you never owned

Here's an odd question. What is the best/favorite tractor you never personally owned? In other words, what tractor did you always desire or admire and never had?

We are Deere folks. I drool over a 6030. They were big and bad, the big dog of 2wd deeres at the time. Another one for me is an IH 1206. I love the styling and paint scheme on those. Another one I always liked was my neighbor's White 185 workhorse fwa. He had duals on the front and it was downright sexy. I never had any of the 3 and I suppose maybe down the line if I want a big usable toy, I'd look for a 6030, but I'm not into toys just yet. How bout you?

I am an IH man but I always liked the way 4440 Deere's looked. My nephew bought a 4630 a couple of summers ago, I like it too, although I think my 1086 has a little more snort to it. I like that 4630 though.

I liked the looks of Massey 2775/2805's with the block tread front tires and V-8 engines.  I almost bought one last year but the PTO had a bad bearing noise.

Re: Best tractor you never owned

I've driven other people's 3020s and 4020s, and thought they seemed like a pretty good design, but my family never owned one.  I would like to run one long-term to see if they really lived up to their reputation.

The best tractor we have ever actually owned would be a toss up between a 766 and 1066.  For some reason, they just always seem to start, and run.  While not the most modern, or convenient, they just go and go.  I also recently bought a 5088 that I am becoming fond of, except I wish it had a better linkage to the 3-pt control.  While it works OK, it is not as precise as the 66 series for things like a 3-pt blade, due to slop in the linkage.

Re: Best tractor you never owned

Well if you would have asked last fall i would have said the tractor that i always wanted was a case magnum. Anywhere from the 71 series to the 8000 series. I always thought they were "bad" lookin tractors with the front wheel assist. But i bought one in september so my dream came true. Next on my list would be the Ford versatile four wheel drives. Now i will probably never need a tractor that big but i drove one when i was in my early teens and i jsut loved it. Just a big mean tractor and had better colors than the orginal versatile. Or the orginial Steiger for another big tractor. Always had a crush on them. We have a 4000 jd for our old classic tractor that my grandpa bought new in 69. I would like to buy a 3020 and a 4010 to make a set since the 4000 was asembled using the left over parts from both those tractors.

Re: Best tractor you never owned

I worked on a hog farm near the Purdue campus when I was a senior there in the mid 80's.  One of the jobs was to haul manure - and I used his JD 4440 for that job.  8 speed powershift - I loved that tractor.  I grew up on Allis Chalmers at home.  We'll just say the 4440 had a "Viagra effect" long before there was such a thing.

I started farming with Allis in 1969. Later I  bought a 4440. I still farm a little with that tractor.  Still waiting for the "Viagra" effect to kick in! Tell me about it...soyroy...

Agree with the 1066 thing, Mine was bought new by my dad, then I bought it from him. Man is it a good old horse. Injection pump and injectors once, and a clutch and TA job, other than that no problems, got about 8000 hours on it.

Best tractor?  1972 John deere 4020 with a turbo and 8 speed powershift.  Not even close.
