CaseIH mx240 or 270

I'm considering updating to something along the lines of a MX240 or 270.  I don't have much history on either model, so any input about possible problems with them I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Might help to know what year you're looking at. The earlier models I believe had some injection issues. You'll have to find someone who has had more experience with them than me.

I think those models had electronical issues, too. one dealership told me that virtually every one had to have the electronic tach replaced at least once, so it is buyer beware when it comes to actual hours.

Someone else please set the record straight on these models if they know. i was advised to stay away from them, that the older magnums were better and more reliable.

Someone operating one said that the transmission went from forward to reverse right in the field during operations and this was on a unit with about 500 hours.

The early 240s had injector pump issues.  Most have been updated by now.  We have a 2002 (the last year the 240s were made) and we have had a lot of little electronic things go bad.  Nothing major, just a lot of aggravating things.  My mechanic tells me that the 255s (next series newer) are better and the 245s (next series newer yet) are much better.  We also have a 7110 and an 8930.  Our 240 has been in the shop more than our two older magnums combined.  I personally would move up to the 245s if you have the money to do it!  If money is an issue, stick with the 8900 series.  You will give up some turning radius on the FWA, but, they are much more reliable than the 240s.

I really appreciate the input.  I have a neighbor with a 255 that he hasn't had any problems with, but that is certainly out of my price range (isn't money always an issue!)  This was my first year farming and used Dad's JD 4640 so I'd really like to upgrade.  Thanks again

This is your first year farming and you are looking at tractors like this. My advice stick with the 4640 and save money to buy ground. Unless you have an operation turned over to you with lots of land, then do what you want. Just a thought.
