Chevy C 60 rear brakes

can anyone give me an idea of what it takes to pull the rear duals of a chevy C 60.  it has those spoke wheels.   I need to put a cylinder kit in the rear brakes.

I think getting them off is the easy part. Getting them back on straight can be tough.

The wheels are the easy part. Getting the drums off can be a bear.

Re: Chevy C 60 rear brakes

It's not that bad. Use an impact wrenc to remove the wheel nuts then remove the wedges, May have to smack them with a hammer to get them to move. Slide the outer tire off, then the spacer ring then the inner tire. Remove the bolts at the end of the hub (holding either the axle on drive axle or cap on tag axle. Remove large axle nuts, may require a special socket, but sometimes you can get them loose with ahammer and chisel, socket would be best. The drum should now slide off, but you may have to back off the brake adjuster first if the drum has a ridge. Everything is very heavy.  Patrick

Re: Chevy C 60 rear brakes

Park it on concrete. Jack the rear from center of differential so as not to tilt the rear from side to side. Lay a piece of cardboard under the tires. Back the brakes off if its air brake. Pull the axle studs and remove the axle shaft. Remove wheel bearing nuts and outer bearing. Let the the jack down to where the tires just touch the cardboard sheet. Pull on the cardboard and tires/wheels and brake drum will slide off the axle housing.

No wheel cylinders in air brakes.

Re: Chevy C 60 rear brakes

That's what I thought. I've only delt with air brakes on big trucks and disk brakes on pickup trucks.

Will the above procedure for removing the drum be the same for air brakes. I've got one I may have to do in the near future.

Re: Chevy C 60 rear brakes

Same exact thing Buck. Just back the slack adjuster off to release the shoes from the drum. Might want to have a gallon paint bucket handy when you pull the axle shaft out. It fits under the housing and inside the wheel to catch the 90w. Oil will make a mess out of shiny aluminum wheels!
