when you replace the axle nuts, do you have to torque them to a specific lbs/ft?   One video that I was watching you had to tighten first nut then back it off,  then tighten the second outer nut, then check the in play.  That wasn' t on a C 60, it was on a bigger truck, but just wonder if it was similar to that?  I'm assuming you had to do all that to pre load the bearings?

The way I was taught is spin the tire until there is a drag as you tighten the inner nut. Smack the tire with sledge a few times and spin it again. If there is just a slight bit of drag, you're perfect. Not so much as to stop the wheel from spinning like a brake, but just a touch less than free wheeling. Line up the spacer that prevents inner nut from turning and run the jam nut up against it. I don't know if this is the right way or not, but I've never had one come apart or wear the bearings prematurely.

 Yes . You tighten the first nut snug, then back off 1/4 turn. Then tighten the outer nut. Should be very little play. Too tight and the bearings will run hot and prematurely fail, too loose is not good either.  Patrick

Caution!  Just LOOSEN the nuts first.  Tap the wedges until free to relieve the pressure, otherwise they could slingshot across the shop unless stopped by your beltbuckle or kneecap.  Then remove the nuts.

do not think you need to pull axel to work on air brakes.
