Dissapointed with Autosteer

We demo'd a tractor and planter this year, tractor had autosteer and the works. I have to say that in our area I don't see much return on the investment, we have lots of terraces and it just didnt seem to work well. I think it would be great on the bottoms, but of my ground only about 25% is flat. Even the specialist from the dealer told me, if you buy this tractor tell them you dont want the autosteer. Any one else have this happen.

Re: Dissapointed with Autosteer

This is a good question.  i'm strongly thinking of getting autosteer for next year, and one of my questions was how it would work with contour farming.  I should do more and wonder if it would be easier or harder with autosteer?

I'm wondering if we should set up a field pattern before hand and try to get the tractor to follow the patterns, or if we should rather try to use one of the default pattrrns and live with the results?

Most of my fields I think autosteer would work very well in but I'm anxious to see what others say about your question.

Almost all contour here. Took the markers off 4 years ago and have never missed them. Lots of variables involved in selecting a system and getting it properly set up so hard to say what was giving you troubles.

Re: Dissapointed with Autosteer

I need to get it just because of peer pressure. I have a neighbor that farms 120 acres, that has it. I have a new planter and gps map as a i plant with my integra, but (sigh) i still drive the mark. It's really amazing that i even get a crop.  a better payback for me looks to be the automatic row shutoffs. oh, i farm where it is mostly flat and square.

Re: Dissapointed with Autosteer

Aaron...maybe you could share what system you're using...What signal you're using..and how your farm is placed so that signals always make it to your receiver. I was listening to a local guy here in NW Ohio the other day complaining about how his was working..and was awful glad I didn't have to mess with it. He was using Omnistar..and had a rep riding the tractor with him..and couldn't get the darn thing working.

Re: Dissapointed with Autosteer

Have rolling ground and some treelines, currently running a GS2630 on SF2 signal but any of the major systems will do the job if properly set up. Sounds like the guy you were talking too needs to find a better rep. For me autosteer is priceless, it lets me concentrate on doing a better job of planting. I stay for more alert watching what the planter is doing than I ever did mindlessly staring at a marker all day. I also come back and sidedress NH3 and spray folling the same track. If some guys think it is a needless luxury, that is fine, I'm not a salesman. Some guys think a air conditioned cab is a luxury too, whatever works.
