First farm tractor

What was your first tractor? I’m working on an article and want to know about the first tractor you bought or the first one you used growing up. What do you remember about it? What did you love about driving it? Did it have any interesting/unique features?

And if you still have a photo, post that, too. I’d love to see it!

Re: First farm tractor

This is the "bug". Built in the late 1920's. Not the first tractor I drove, that was a Farmall H. It is the first tractor the fifth generation driver in the picture ever drove. It is the second tractor my family owned.

Shown with optional RC cultivator, and bolt on narrow front.

Not a kit. One off, hand built, from a wrecked Model A car and a wore out Model T truck. Without a welder, in the basement, one

cold MN winter.

Features include...plush high back seat, no air cleaner for ease of maintenance(easier just to stick in different motor when the oil smoke got to bad), Oldsmobile motometer radiator cap/water temp guage(probably stolen from junk yard, I'm sure they couldn't afford one), hand and foot throttle, all bolted together construction(that's how they were able to get it out of the basement), three speeds forward, one reverse, mechanical two speed rear end(I guess that would make 6 forward and two reverse speeds), top road speed 40+ mph?(no one including myself has dared to let er go), one turn lock to lock steering, bolt on narrow front(driver needs big arms for this option), pto which fastens to rear wheel(stationary use only while jacked up), wooden seat frame that also doubles as a rock carrier for added weight when plowing(tire chains recommended for plowing, the rock also doubled as buddy/instructional seat), a one row mounted RC cultivator(converted from horse drawn), and electric start. The Farmall 10/20, or the new steel wheel Farmall H didn't even have that option when they finally got it. It's also impervious to an electromagnetic pulse.

Hours are unknown. It's been stuck, flipped over backwards, almost killed two great uncles, cursed and praised. I can go to the shed hook the battery up and it will start, run, and work. There is nothing enjoyable about driving it. The plush origianal seat is long gone.  Market value, what ever it weighs for junk. Personal value, priceless...I wish it could talk.

Re: First farm tractor

First to drive, John Deere B. Two row rotory hoe in a half mile long field. Talk about an endless summer. Still have it.

Re: First farm tractor

Fitst tractor I drove was a Farmall C raking hay with a New Holland 56 rake. First I bought was a JD 4455.  Patrick

Re: First farm tractor

That would be a very long summer! Do you still have the hoe or the tractor? Or both?

Re: First farm tractor

Almost a 100 years later and it’s still running – pretty impressive. Thanks for sharing the photos and story. Hope the fifth generation appreciates the “bug” and all of its quirks as much as you do!

Tractor. Hoe got lost to the high salvage price. First tractor I bought was a 1586. Still use it also.

Re: First farm tractor

First tractor operated 1943 A/C model B I was so small I had to slide down off the seat to push the clutch in. First tractor purchased 1968 or 1969 JD model 2520D
