Ford L9000 or International 9200
Looking at either of these trucks. The 9000 has a L10 Cummins and the international has a N14 Cummins. Is either truck more reliable then the other. Weve always run ford trucks but have never had a semi from them, international seems to be good truck company though. Any thoughts?

Re: Ford L9000 or International 9200
I don't have alot of experience, but do have a ford L9000 with an L-10. My first thought is that the n-14 would be way more power, and way heavier, too. My L-9000 was a semi that I hadd the frame stretched and put on a 20' box and hoist. It also is a 13 speed. My impression of the L-10 , that i have, is that it would be a little underpowered to pull a 42' trailer around. It works nicely as a tandem and would handle a trailer on our mostly level ground, but..... the n-14 is and can be ALOT more engine. good luck.

We have a 9000 tri-axle that hauls about 750bu. with an L10, it's horribly underpowered, I would pick the N14 plus I think you'll like the Int. chassis better in the end also.

Re: Ford L9000 or International 9200
Well im not going to be pulling a 42 ft trailer any time soon, in our area it is just so hard to get in and out of fields, and we have a few fields where you have to go through pastures. Most of our fields are only 40 to 60 acres those that are bigger aren't in just one clump either, Im looking at probley a 28 or 30 ft trailer.

If the 9200 is a daycab, a 9 or 13 spd, 24.5 rubber, 3.9 to 4.10 rearends, let me know where it is if you are not going to buy it. Especially if it has 500,000 miles or so and is clean. Not that I am fussy or anything. Smiles.

Re: Ford L9000 or International 9200
...The International will be much cheaper, and easier to find parts for...even though you must know a good supplier of Ford parts. The 9200..is also has a relatively set back front axle...and that will allow it to be much more maneuverable than the 9000. The M11 isn't a bad motor..especially for loads below 80,000....and that's what you're going to be hauling with less than a 30 foot trailer. You can't meet the length requirements for the bridge laws with such a short trailer...and unless it's a tri-axle....it won't legally carry a full 80,000 lb. load. The N14 will be plenty of horsepower if you decide on a bigger trailer...and it doesn't take bigger than a 40 acre field to turn a 36 foot trailer around in. In my opinion....I'm with Red, I'll take the 9200, with a 4.10 gear in it...(unless it has 22.5 tires..and then go for the 3.90 ratio) 24.5 tires...a 10 speed (One with an overdrive as the top gear) and about a 36 foot hopper. That should be long enough to haul a legal load....

Re: Ford L9000 or International 9200
Problem isnt turning in the field, Its trying to get into the field to start with, narrow roads, narrow gates, just much more convenient, there are plenty of guys that are running 26ft and 28 ft trailers in our area, its basically the norm, very rare to see anybody over 30, expecially a 36 or even a 42, According to my math on the bridge formula i can be at 74,250 lbs total Gross vehicle weight, so figure a truck weighs in the 15,000 area, a 28' neville trailer weighs 9100 lbs which would allow for 50,150 lbs of grain divided by 60lbs wheat would be over 800 bushels, which is more then you can even get on a 28' trailer, usually probley only haul 700 to 750. More then likely im going to be hard pressed even getting to 72,000 lbs. All my trips are usually at most 15 miles to town. Not to worried about the bridge formula..........also not to worried about getting to 80,000 lbs. A bigger trailer then 28' really doesn't do me much good, maybe a 30', it would allow me to harvest longer to start and to end with, but we only have a 400 bushel grain cart and itll take us around 2:30 hours as it is to fill a 28' trailer harvesting 7.5 acres an hour with our 1460, saving money on a trailer and going with a bigger grain cart, or perhaps going with two cheaper smaller trucks and trailers would be more benefical because the biggest thing we run into is 3 hour wait lines at the elevator, at that point it really doesnt matter how big your truck is if its sitting in line, haveing a second truck or bigger grain cart helps you more, just another couple points that 28' is a good fit for the money, no need to spend anymore on a bigger trailer that is hard to maneuver with and doesn't increase capacity that much.
Thanks for the advice though, if i get the acres and the bins to store grain and a more experienced driver, then ill consider a bigger trailer.

Re: Ford L9000 or International 9200
i drove an L10, rated at 270hp for a while. it had a 10spd, and 10th never got used when it was loaded. little thing would not get out of its own way. the other guys have you steered in the right direction, go with the N14, or you will regret it. as far as trucks, they are very comparable. about the same features and quality. there are parts available for both of them, so i think the decision should come down to the engine.

Re: Ford L9000 or International 9200
Buy the International. The parts are much easier and cheaper to come by and the dealer network is good..at least here in Ohio. We get a few Fords in our shop at work and the parts are becoming obsolete whereas the International will have a dealer about every 60 miles from an interstate. The N-14 is a much better engine also.
