Can anybody tell me how they like or dislike these?

They are big, heavy, ugly pull hard ... and I wouldn't be without one.

Just don't buy an old one.  I had a customer who had an early model.  He said they considered mounting a welder on it to make repairs easier.  He was only slightly joking.  Later models seem to have solved those problems.

It isn't a perfect tool, but I haven't found one of those in almost 40 years of looking.  It is one of the best finishing tools I've seen.  We have 3 implements we pull with our big tractor, a ripper, disk/rolling harrow combination, and a Till-oll.  It is our only finishing tool.

Would a JD 4840 pull one with a rolling harrow behind?  Would the rolling harrow even be a benefit?  Thanks for your help!

Of course it can .. if it is the right size.  I thought I had some photos of ours, but can't find them.  We pull a 30 ft Till-oll with a Case 9270 4WD tractor.  Neighbor pulls one just a bit larger with a slightly bigger tractor. I think a rolling basket would be a good addition, but not necessarily needed.  The risk we would have is too fine a seed bed.  If we have it worked that fine and get a rain on it we would risk it turning to concrete.  Here is the seedbed this Spring after running a ripper through the bean stubble in the fall and hitting it once with a Till-oll in the Spring

Awesome info, thanks.  I guess I forgot to list a size, ooops.  I was thinking a 21 footer, with a 22 or 23 foot rolling harrow.

I notice in the photo that you have some what appear to be Schlagel mudder wheels.  How do you like those?

I think your tractor will probably handle it, but it will be loaded.  I've always been told a tilloll works better at speed, so more tractor than needed is better.

Closing wheels .. see my blog post at http://bumpusfarms.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html Wedid some experimenting with closing wheels last Spring.  I bought a pallet of various types and styles and we played with them.  I really like the Posi-Close, but they cause us a problem in seed production.  Whenyo come back to plant the male rows you can't seewhere the rows are!

We're planning on selling some of them, along with some other excess stuff we have setting around.  we really like the IH early riser type, but I'm not sure they gain us enough to justify the expense.   I just got done listing my big ugly forklift in the machinery Marketplace and will probably list a few more things the next week or so.
