Perkins engine in 40 series John Deere tractor..

You guys think I can make a Perkins engine fit in a 4040 john deere tractor with power shift???

 It all depends on how bad you want to make it work. For me all it takes is the right person to tell me it can't be done. Will it be worth all the trouble? Probably not.  Patrick

The Oliver 1850 had a Perkins 354 and it is fairly close in size, so maybe you could make it work.  It would be a nice engine.

My cousins had at least a couple Massey Fergusons with the 354. They were never happy with the fuel efficiency.
Jim what horsepower was the 1850 rated. Thinking they had that motor in bigger machines. May have been why they didn't like them. Seems like they never had any trouble with them though.

I've seen various numbers from 92-95 hp or so.

I remember their 1105 Massey had that motor and they didn't like it. It was rated at 110 hp. They had a 1085 with a aftermarket tubo that pulled a 4-18 plow faster with much less fuel. Man.. Those stories bring back some good old memories.

The 1105 was a dog indeed Buck, but the 1130 had the same engine with a turbo on it and it was a great old workhorse. The 354 was also known to be a very reliable, long lasting engine used in many applications.

New Idea had the turbo charged 354 in their 708 power units. I think they were rated at about 130-140 engine hp. Tough engine, very economical.

You certainly have them talking but why would you bother? Get another JD motor.

I don't have any experience with the newer perkins engines but the older ones where really good on fuel and I found a new one that is cheaper then a John Deere.
