Tractor question

I am looking for a cheaper tractor to leave on the discbine. Considering Case 970/1070, Massey 1085/1105, Oliver 1755/1855, Allis 6080/7000 or whatever. Opinions, advice thanks

Re: Tractor question

I would avoid the 1755/1855 Oliver. We had 2 1855's that had the 1955 engine and they couldn't go more than a 1000 - 1500 hours without an overhaul.  I would drop down a series to an 1850 with the Perkins engine or up to a 2-85 or 2-105 White with the Perkins.  Everyone we knew with 17, 18 and 1955's had issues with the engine.  The rest of the tractor is great.

Re: Tractor question

Neighbor has a 1070, with the 3-speed power shift, that I have done some hay with, and for his uses (pulling a sickle type swather) it works very well.  In 2nd range, 1st on the powershift is slow enough for the rough stuff, yet 3rd on the powershift gets us going about 8-9 acres an hour.  Other than things like a few oil lines that had to be replaced, and the starter going bad, it seems to have been a good tractor for him.

Re: Tractor question

You pretty much ignored the "big 2"...I'm wondering if they don't have a dealership close enough to service you? If I was picking a tractor for haying...it would be an International 686 with the 310 German engine and hydrostatic drive. Second on my list would be a 3020 Deere, one of the most versatile tractors I've ever seen. Either company has others that would work well. An 886 would be a slightly bigger International with a cab (It does have a torque amplifyer for speeding up and slowing down)....and a 4230 or 40 would be a nice size in the Deere.

Re: Tractor question

Parts parts parts the big two have them for the older machines, others maybe maybe not. Don't try to tell me that Deere parts are expensive I have New holland, Case-ih and Deere. I get parts for the others through the Deere dealer when i can. They stock more 4020 parts than the New Holland dealer does for my fourteen year old TS 90.
