Tractor takes on South Pole

Right now, there's a team attempting to drive a Massey Ferguson 5610 tractor to the South Pole. You can read more about it here: http://www.agriculture.com/machinery/tractors/new-tractor/tract-takes-on-south-pole_199-ar46523.

What do you think? Will they make it? Are they nuts for trying? Would you try if you had the chance?

Re: Tractor takes on South Pole

I think for the leader of the team (Manon Ossevoort) it's just a goal she wants to achieve. She has already done one massive tractor ride from her home in the Netherlands to the southern tip of Africa. This is sort of the last leg of her journey.

For Massey Ferguson, I think they get to show how tough the tractor is.

Re: Tractor takes on South Pole

Well, the first attempt didn't work out so well.

Admiral Byrd took a Cletrac crawler to Antarctica  in 1933.  See this excerpt.

"Motorized transportation was supplied by a Cletrac tractor, two Ford snowmobiles and three Citroëns originally designed for desert work. The 40 horsepower Citroëns had the front wheels replaced with skis. Since motorized transportation still had not proven itself in the Antarctic, 153 sledge dogs were collected from Alaska to Labrador and taken to the ice."

Re: Tractor takes on South Pole

I hadn't heard about the 1933 attempt. The first successful attempt was in 1958 by Sir Edmund Hillary with a Massey Ferguson tractor. Hillary was also the first person to climb Mt. Everest. I talk a little bit about this expedition in my article (link in first post), but you can also read more about it here: http://www.antarcticatwo.com/the-story-so-far/.

Believe it or not, the team arrived at the South Pole today after a 17-day journey: http://www.agriculture.com/machinery/tractors/new-tractor/mission-accomplished-tract-arrives-at_199-....
