auger flighting

How do you determine when to change the flighting in a transport auger? I wouldn't want to wait till it gave me problems. I've used the auger for 35 years, but only to move 20,000 bushels each year. No problems yet but I am guessing when the flighting wears to a critical point, then problems will begin.

Re: auger flighting

the bottom-inlet section will show wear first. that exposed section will get thin and very sharp and even jagged on extrememly worn flighting.  usually just that section can be replaced if it is the only part that is worn.

Re: auger flighting

idalivered is right.  The intake section of the auger is usually the first area to show wear.  The signs are like he said in the later stages of wear but the first indication that I look for on all augers is a wavy pattern on the flighting.  As the flighting wears out and becomes thin it will begin to warp and when you look at it you can see waves in it and be able to feel those waves as well.
