over width load hauling question
I want to haul a john deere disc from nebraska to southern illinois. its folded width at widest point is 14 ft 2 inches. Id like to put it on my trailer and haul it with placards down the interstate, but i am not having much luck finding out this info in regards to a farmer hauling his own equipment. most all things i have looked at so far cover commercial carriers. There are exemptions for farmers drawing implements directly behind a vehicle, but can find nothing pertaing to trailering something. any one have any experience or resources? TIA. Joe

Re: over width load hauling question
I think that you might have to get a oversize permit for $25. Here is a truck guide to download for IDOT http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/omve/default.htm On pg 26/27 it looks like if you`re under 14`-6" wideMCS routing won`t be required. Have Fun.

I have done hauling in the past... I would recommend getting the overwidth permit... your dealing with a government agency here... if you have the permit you will not be at the mercy of a single inforcement officers judgment which could lead to fines and complications... if you have the permit make sure your loaded so your not over the 14' 6" flagman requirement... and put more than enough signs ( overwidth front and rear) and flags on the corners and the widest points of the cargo.. use plenty of tie down chains... don't give them a reason to stop you! the crazy thing here is ... just because you paid for the permit ... now the load is 'safe' to haul.. it's rediculous...however if you meet all the 'requiremnets' on signage and flagging the load acting as the 'dumb hick farmer' will probably get you a tounge lashing and that's about it.. good luck

Re: over width load hauling question
There are several items of interest here with the 14' 2" being the first "red flag" of getting it across 2 major rivers --- to get professional advice on this I would contact a transportation permit company as in ""Transmit America " at 800 - 228 - 7577 and these folks could advise you--- don't ""under apply"" for your permit concerning -weight - length -height --and width --- there are issues concerning travel times called curfew etc.--- Local exemptions are one thing and "interstate travel " is another item--- Don't jeopardize the farm over a hauling liability --- Having hauled several construction project materials over a couple of decades it's not another walk in the park---

Re: over width load hauling question
You are not going to be exempted once you travel more than 150 miles from your farm (atleast in Nebraska), So I would say that all the federal regulations are going to apply to you. Is your truck commercially plated and insured for interstate transport? Do you have a DOT Medical Examiner's card? My guess is that you are going to need it, there are at least 2 scales between Lincoln and Davenport. What will your overall height be if the disk is 14'2" ?
I agree with everyone else, get the permits.
