158 years ago today
Vicksburg falls and Grant wires Lincoln, “the Mother of Waters flows unvexed to the sea.”
Of all the martial history of the US, the war to save the nation the most important to recall.

Re: 158 years ago today
Without the first American civil war, the war of independence that pitched patriots against the English loving tories, there would not have been a second civil war.
Today of all days, maybe just lay low and leave the real Americans alone. Is that too much to ask?

Re: 158 years ago today
SD would like to ignore the fact that had the civil war happened in the 20th instead of the 19th century, Sherman and Grant and others would have been hanged for war crimes against civilians in the South. Which begs the question - what would actually have been wrong with letting the South secede? California would be a top-10 economy if they were an independent nation - would we now fight a war to keep them in the Union if they decided they wanted to go their own way?

Re: 158 years ago today
The 1% slavers would never voluntarily abandon the system, and by nature it had to expand or die.
All farmers naturally work to expand their livestock herds- the slaves were worth more than the land. Without land to expand the slaves onto, the population would soon become unmanageable.
You mention California. The Mexican (and Texas) wars- among our worst- were essentially slavery expansion exercises.
BTW, human slavery is abominable and so is anybody who does yeah buhwhatabout concerning it.

Re: 158 years ago today
All this is a red herring issue on the
4th of July.
It is a day set aside to celebrate the birth of OUR nation with a governance model like no other at the time.
No kings, queens, czars, etc.
Numb nuts SD comes on here all about something 90ish years later. Nothing to do with the celebration of the birth of our nation and the extreme sacrifices of many poor and rich alike.
I take back what I said earlier about him being intelligent, but not the stupid part.

Re: 158 years ago today
Yes, but for 80+ years America didn’t know what it wanted to be when it grew up.
Even if we tolerated contempt for the Constitution in the former breakaway region for another 90 years, the matter was settled.
