No battle here

1/3 = HRW Wheat

1/3 = Grain & Forage Sorghum

1/3 = Fallow

That are my plans for 14, 15, 16,...

Re: 2014 acreage battle starts today.......

Yep, I've decided the old timers (and I use that phrase very loosely) knew what they were talking about all these year.  If dryland corn was meant to be grown in this area, we'd see 1000's of acres every year, not just a few 100 like we have lately.  Seed genetics can only carry so much of the weight.  My guess is we can successfully grow it 1 maybe 2 years out of a 10 year stretch.  If I'd know what years they were, I'd continue to plant 1/3 of my acres to corn.  Fallow needs to be worked back into a successful crop rotation in this area.  Move just a few miles east of me and that whole philosophy changes.  I'm not sure, but I think the night time heat around here does as much harm as our limited rainfall.

The local producers who have the best looking crops year after year have a certain percentage of their acres fallow each year.  I might consider some cover crops that I can hay in the early summer months instead of fallowing, but haven't completely made a decision on that either.

Shaggy, what about a cover crop, let it get 10 inches tall and kill it? Above ground is a weed suppression and moister saver, below ground ads organic matter. Just a thought.

Tree fmr--we usually do not like to sacrifice even the moisture to grow a cover crop. I had 60 acres that grew into a mess this summer. Never again. Will put something on wheat ground cut for hay to suppress weeds and let the ground sit

Re: 2014 acreage battle starts today.......

lets see

80% soybeans

20% HRW wheat

There are only so many soybeans because I have to get rid of the corn yet and its cold. plus, I have picked up a bunch of new land.

otherwise, id grow a lot more wheat. local price for next year has been 260/t for hrww.

Like BK, I tried 50 acres of cover crops that turned out to be a mess. I may consider trying them one more time, but I'll consider haying them before I kill them. Not completely decided yet.
